Review of:The Departed (2006)
Director:Martin Scorsese
Rating:R for strong brutal violence, pervasive language, some strong sexual content and drug material.
Starring:Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Jack Nicholson
When I first heard that Martin Scorsese was coming out with a Godfather type movie I was elated. Even though I was a youngster when the original film was released I could always appreciate the beauty of that film.
This time out Mr. Scorsese picks the thin line that separates criminal from law. Something like a thin line between love and hate in theory I believe. The story is about two men who are leading lies. One has infiltrated the police (Matt Damon) but is in fact working for the mob boss that saved him as a young child, and the other is working as a policeman (Leonardo Dicaprio), but has all the instincts of a criminal. It is a kind of shady concept to me, but in the hands of a master storyteller such as Mr. Scorsese it comes together nicely.
Matt Damon and Leonardo Dicaprio do excellent jobs with the dialect and the acting in the film. You actually feel for both of these men as you watch them struggle with what they are supposed to do, and what they are led to do. Even though their work is outstanding the standout actor to me in the film would have to be Mark Walhberg, and especially Jack Nickolson. After all this time old Jack still can dominate the screen when he comes on.
Although the film is violent at times he keeps you rapped up in what is going on from the opening scenes to the very end. Excellent film.
