First, let me start off that I’m a fan of Indie filmmaker Simon Boisvert works. Barmaids; Guys, Girls, and a Jerk are pretty good fair. They tell a story that is witty, while at the same time telling a pretty good story. This fifth film, Swinging Couples, didn’t match up to them in my estimation.
The story is about, you guessed it, swinging couples. It is a subject matter that is both intriquing and serious at the same time. Mr. Boisvert tries his best to bring out these quirks in the relationships that he shows. The characters are faced with a host of different roadblocks to happiness. Cheating, Jealousy, and low self-esteem are some of the subject matter that the group must go through.
Can these friends do the do and come out alright in the end? It’s an interesting question and it is even answered in a way in the end, but just not to my satisfaction. My main quirk about this movie would have to be that the director has taken himself out of the flow of things, and in general stays behind the camera. In the other films, the filmmaker himself infused the scenes with a bit of sharp comedy that I liked. That sharpness is missing in this film, replaced with a bit more skin.
While there are some things that this film does better, mainly production value, the end result is a good film that doesn’t grab my attention all the way through.
