Marley & Me is another film about a dog that follows in the tradition of a long line of dog movies. Beethoven seems to be the most frequent one that comes to mind, but let me assure you-Marley and me is a much better film.
The story follows an ambitious young reporter, John Grogan (Owen Wilson), and his wife, Jenny (Jennifer Aniston), as they marry and make a move to Florida. Jenny has a timetable that she follows and before he knows it, John feels that the next thing on Jenny’s list is to start a family. Trying to belay what he feels is the next thing to come he decides to buy a dog to satiate Jenny’s desire for kids.
Boy did he make a mistake!
Or did he?
Marley (named after the reggae star Bob Marley) could easily be considered the dog version of Dennis the Menace. No sofa is safe from his extra strong teeth and no thing within the house or yard goes untouched. In this mayhem is where the beauty of this film lies though. The film shows that nothing can be put on a schedule and that there will be things that happen in our life that are beyond are control. The simplest of which is falling in love with a movie about a dog and enjoying it with one's family.
Marley is a film that can be viewed by all without the customary cussing and profane ways that seem to have invaded our films today. I can promise you that if you have a dry eye at the end of this film you must have taken a prolonged break at the concession stand.
