The Review

Yeah Baby.  Austin Powers returns for its third and installment.  Bringing together much of the elements from the first two movies you would think that it would pick up exactly where it picked off.  The laugh meter would be going off the charts, and you would be picking your candy up off the floor.  The first twenty minutes of the film show the true originality of what Austin Powers represented at one time.  The minutes after that are just a rehash of things that have been done in the first two films.  There is even a joke made to that very effect.

New to the cast is Nigel Powers (Micheal Caine) playing as Austin Powers swinging dad.  You immediately see where Austin Powers gets his good looks, and his famous mojo from.  One noticeable difference is that Nigel is a bit more self confident if you can believe that.  Mike Myers introduces the world to a new character, the appropriately called goldmember.  This character must have been added just so that they could play off of his name in the title because he adds absolutely nothing to the movie.  Where Dr. Evil is a complex character, sometimes evil sometimes lovable, Goldmember is a one dimensional character with a sick fetish for gold.  You don't pick up any EVIL vibes from this character only the feeling that he should be in a mental institution for the harmless.  The best new character to the film, but not used enough is Foxxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles).  With Foxxy you can see why they say sugar, and spice, and everything nice.  Hard on the outside with a warm gooey center.

The story goes something like this- Dr. Evil has a plot to take over the world (again).  If he can go back to 1975 he can arrange for a giant meteor to plummet to earth.  Before he can hatch his fiendish plan he is caught, but not before enlisting the help of goldmember.  When Ausin finds out his father has been taken he sets out to find him, taking him to the year 1975.  Pimpmobile in tow Austin uncovers the fiendish plot, and must take steps to put it to an end.  With the help of Foxxy Cleopatra he sets off to do just that.

With the rehashing of so many jokes Austin Powers is more like a ten year reunion than the first day of a new school year.  You've seen a lot of it before. Seth Green as Scott Evil doesn't really seem to find his way in the film either.   The only thing that saves the movie from being your run of the mill is the hilarious beginning.
